Enter your total word goal, the words you've already written, your start date, your deadline and how many rest days you take a week. The calculator divides the words left by your writing days and shows a daily target plus weekly checkpoints. For example, 50,000 words over the 30 days of November with no days off works out at 1,667 words a day.
How the calculation works
- Words left = total goal minus words already written.
- Writing days = days from the start date to the deadline, including both, minus your rest days. Rest days fall at the end of each 7-day block from the start date.
- Daily target = words left divided by writing days, rounded up.
- Checkpoints show the running total you should have reached at the end of each writing week.
Common goals
| Goal | Typical length | Words a day over 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| November novel challenge | 50,000 words | 1,667 |
| Thesis chapter | 8,000 to 12,000 words | 267 to 400 |
| Short story | 3,000 to 7,500 words | 100 to 250 |
Lengths vary by field, genre and publisher, so use your own target if you have one. The 50,000-word November challenge is explained in our guide to writing a novel in November.
Making the daily number happen
- Break it into sprints. Time a few word sprints to find your pace, then work out how many you need a day.
- Front-load the first week. A little extra early on gives you room for the days that go wrong.
- Don't restart. If you fall behind, recalculate from today with your current total instead of starting over. Our guide on how to finish a first draft covers why restarting kills drafts.
Frequently asked questions
How many words a day is 50,000 words in a month?
1,667 words a day for 30 days. With one rest day a week, it's about 1,924 words on each of the 26 writing days.
Should I count rest days?
If you know you won't write on some days, yes. A target you actually hit is better than a smaller one you keep missing.
I'm behind. What do I do?
Enter your current word count in "Words already written" and change the start date to today. The calculator spreads what's left over the days remaining.
